I decided to take this opportunity to go fish.

Matthew and I reached the spot at about 3.30pm. First we tried for some haruans using minnows. I caught one small one after about 10 casts and Matthew missed a few.

We got tired of catching haruans so we carried on to the main course. Took out my Jackson Athlete while Matthew used an XPS minnow. We tried all around the spot, but no fish were present. When we were about to move again, something hit my lure. Gave it a hard strike and the fight was on. As I didn't want to lose the fish, I started cranking like mad. Within 10 seconds, the herring was landed. Although a small species, it's the first one for me. We continued fishing but gave up eventually.

Suddenly, we all had the urge to hunt for haruans AGAIN. Took out my favourite topwater lure, Yozuri Arm Swisher and within 5 casts, i was rewarded with a nice attack on my lure. Gave a strike and slowly fought the fish. The haruan landed was slightly bigger than my first one. While fishing for more, the sky was overcast and we had to run for shelter.

Trying my luck

Decided to give Bedok Reservoir aka The Dead Reservoir a try. Woke up at 5.30am and headed for bedok. Met Matthew on the train and met Aaron at Tampines station.

Reached the reservoir and rigged up my fly fishing equipment. Started off with some unknown fly but eventually changed to a white charlie. I was the first one to hit a small peacock.

While walking, I spotted a breeding pair of peacocks. All 3 of us were anxious to get them. I threw my charlie at them...twitch, twitch...ahhh, missed! Repeated this cycle about 5 times before I saw the peacock inhale my fly. Gave it a nice hard strike. It shook it's head a few times while a passed my rod to Matt so he could enjoy the fight as well. Landed it and took a photo.
nice 2pounder.

Next was Matt's turn. He was swearing away because the peacock wouldn't take his fly nicely. But finally it took it. The fly was inhaled and Matt fought it well. As I was about to land it, the fly came out of the fish's mouth and almost flew at my face.

Oh well, more chances for his first fish on fly next time...

Koi Hunting

Koon Wei invited me to fish with him at a top secret spot with our main species being targetted kois. Reached the spot and just tied on a size 5 or 6 hook and hooked some bread on it. At first we squeezed the bread, causing it to sink. The kois didn't really fancy this and so we changed to floating bread. Rayner was the first to get a koi. The koi surfaced, looked at the bread and inhaled it. The fight was incredible considering the amount of line being peeled out. He landed it. It was a nice 2lb yellow coloured koi.

Next it was my turn. Spotted 2 kois swimming about eating the bread that we had berleyed. I hooked on a piece of bread and casted it right next to the kois. The kois were very cautious but fortunately fell to my trap. It surfaced and inhaled it good. I gave it a hard strike and the fight was on. ZZZzzZZZZZZ!!!! Line was peeling out fast. I had to control the fish so it wouldnt head for the snags. This bugger was powerful!! There were times where i thought i had lost the fish to snags but forunately, the hook didnt come off. Phew! I landed it with the help of koon wei. Weighed it on my immitation boga. WOAH!!! A 4LBER!!! This bugger was fat!! Unhooked it and released it back.

I had reached my quota for the day and let koon wei catch a koi. While i was hooking on some bread, i heard Koon Wei say, "lai liao, lai liao" i turned and saw him give a hard strike. ZZZzzzzZZZ!!!! The same thing happened, line was peeling out fast and this clever fish kept heading for the snags but Koon Wei managed to control it. He landed it and weighed it. A 4lber as well! It was one fat ass koi....

Since we had all reached our quota for the day and we didn't want to scare all the other kois, we left the place and shouldnt return there for a while to let the fish relax for a bit...but fear not, WE WILL BE BACK!!

CR 020606

Went down to a certain saltwater spot with Sam. Started using my Storm rubber but eventually changed to Tail Dancer. That whole morning didn't hit anything until we went FRESHWATER =D

Reached the spot with Sam using his Gunnish and me using Zara Super Spook. Was luring next to him when his lure was ambushed as it went past a structure. BOOM!! The fish jumped, clearing the body over the water by about 50cm. TARPON!!! Unfortunately, he lost the fish....oh well.

I went over to another side, when i heard Sam go, "Tio, tio!!!" I ran over to see him fighting the fish. But when i was there, the fish managed to shake the hook as it went through a structure....according to Sam, it was either a tarpon or a herring.

We decided to move on to another spot. I changed to an L-Minnow. On my first cast, I saw a fish chasing it in but couldn't identify it. Made another cast and it hit the lure. Fearing the fish might head for the structure, i pumped it hard and ended the fight in abot 10seconds. =D. Turned out to be quite a small haruan. (500g)

After this, headed to another spot.

Had lunch and took a train to the spot. Was using the ol' faithful Zara Super Spook as there were quite a few toman risings in the distance. On my about 6th cast, something hit my lure with an explosion. Due to the many weeds all around, i pumped it hard and eventually it surfaced.....A PEACOCK??!!?!?! oh well, I was pretty amazed that something whacked the huge lure. It was also my first fish on a walk-the-dog lure.

LSR 160506

Took the first train down to LSR and reached at 6.45am. Not a lot of action at the jetty, a few babies playing around the surface.

When matt arrived, we moved on to another spot. Started casting but no fish.......soon, Justin and PITT came. Shared rods with them.

Not long after, there was a toman school pretty far out. Managed to reach it once but no bites so carried on fishing for Peacock Bass. I was using my L Minnow and continued casting. At about 9.30am, I hit the first fish of the day. Since Justin hadn't got a fish on lure yet, i passed my rod to him and let him fight the fish. Though gan chiong, he managed to land the fish. Weighed it on boga and found it was 1lb...haha, not too bad for his first fish on lure. Next it was PITT's turn. On his second cast, I saw him strike and line was coming out. At first i thought it was the weeds but the fish surfaced and it was a nice peacock. He fought the fish well and was 1lb as well.

After the peacock landings, the toman school was back and they were coming in fast. Casted my L minnow right behind the school and hit 1 toman. Extremely small, about 500g. Matt was next and he hit 2 tomans about 500g as well.....no mamas or papas.

Solo Mission at LSR (long time ago)

Went down to LSR at about 6.30am but no kaki to fish with me so i wasn't feeling the very happiest.

Made my way down to the jetty first was casting my Jackson Dead Float but no take. The minute the sun came out, i switched to spin fly and was rewarded with a small peacock not worth taking a picture of. Once all the baiters saw me catch a peacock, they also changed to spin fly and started casting.

Once there were no more, decided to move on to the other location. While walking along the jetty, i heard a huge splash. Looked to the left and saw swirls. Casted my fly and retrieved slowly, jigged a bit here and there. BOOM. Reached there at about 7.15am.

Went to my first spot and started luring with my UL outfit with my Jackson Dead Float.
Spotted the first ripple. casted there.....got a small PB around palm size. Such a small PB makes such a big ripple...hmm

Met Sam there and started luring with him. 15min later, we saw a huge PB whack his new lure...WING MINNOW. But he didn't really see properly...ended up hesitating and missed the fish. about 10 min later, he got another PB. But this one looks more like a black bass. =)

Saw a lot of action from baiters on the jetty so went there next. casted and casted....NOTHING. Went back to the same spot again. My friend decided to come to watch us fish. When he was about to arrive, i caught a nice Peacock. Inhaled the whole fly.

The minute he came. Woke up damn early to catch the first train, which turned out to be 6.40am.

Reached LSR at about 7.15am. Went to the jetty first. Did a little casting here and there with baiters all around me. Was supposed to meet Ian there but he hadn't arrived yet so I went to the first spot by myself.

The minute I reached, there were a huge group of fish making a lot of disturbance on the water surface. I casted out my fly to the group and slowly twitched and reeled... ...Nothing!! Then I suspected Toman. Fear not, I continued using fly and soon enough, I had caught a small one not worth taking a picture of. So it is a Peacock Bass frenzy!! They were jumping everywhere, but not really interested in my fly. I was shocked. How can a Peacock not be interested in a fly?!?! After many attempts, I caught a few small ones. Finally, I had hooked on to a big one. Made a hard strike and the fight was on. It wasn't that big but really showed off with some aerial displays, wetting me a bit.

After this fish, I decided to change spot as the sun was blasting at me point blank, I couldn't take it anymore. Went back to the jetty. Went Silverfox there and a few others. Cast cast cast. NOTHING. Must be because of all the baiters there. Finally Ian came. Made a few casts and went back to my spot.

We fished for a while before both of us couldn't handle the sun anymore and gave up. Went for a toilet break. But we weren't ready to give up on that spot. After a sip of water, we were back at it!

We were casting at one spot before Ian spotted a whole school of PB, ranging from small fries to big mamas. But soon they moved off. Ian continued to try there while i moved on. When I was about to make my first cast, I heard Ian go, "WOAHHH!!!" I turned around and saw his rod bending. I guided him through the short fight and pretty soon, he landed it. Good size for his first fish on lure and first PB ever caught.

Next, Ian caught a small fry. This attracted the attention of the big mama. I casted my fly right in front of her mouth and she whacked it hard! I struck, and fought for a few seconds before she managed to spit the hook. Damn! Not knowing how she could've spit the hook, i continued. This happened a few more times!! Then i realised that my drag wasnt set high enough. AHHHH!!!!! wasted.

Now it was my turn. saw a nice sized PB come around. casted my fly at it. BOOM, it took it. I saw the whole fly disappear into its mouth. Struck and the fight was on. Landed it quickly.

In the end, I cant really remember what happened, but Ian and I caught 1 more each.

P.S Thanks to An Ren for the well-tied flies which were not only inexpensive, but also proven to be very effective against Peacocks!!

Peacock Bass CR

Went to BR today with silverfox, mummy_toman, mr neo and naruto. We fished there from about 8.15 to about 9 before we decided to go to another spot. We had breakfast and headed out.

We reached the spot with us all using storm rubber. The first 15min nobody was getting anything before Mr Neo caught the first peacock of the day. At the end of the day, i caught a disappointing 2 fish. Looks like I lose this time. After we fished, it was still very early, about 12.30pm. We went to McDonalds to have a drink before we started to talk about where we wanted to fish next. And it was decided, we were going to recce SOMEWHERE. It was a long drive to the next spot. When we reached, we had to bash through some bushes and finally we were there. The spot looked amazing. It kinda looked like a beach... ...in a reservoir. But only one problem, TOO MANY WEEDS!!!!! We made a few casts before we decided to move to ANOTHER spot. Well in the end, we had no choice but to go to LSR. On my first cast, an average sized PB chased my lure but didnt take it. We walked and walked.....and walked. We reached the jetty where we made a few casts before we started to move on again.

We reached another spot and on my 3rd cast, there was a bite but i missed. casted at the exact same spot and hooked a small PB on spinfly. The subsequent casts were rewarded with a small PB in every cast. We moved on where i casted parallel to the rocks. There was a huge pull. I struck, hmmmmmmm... ...it's not moving....reel, reel, reel....when i was about to land the nice-sized PB, it started to run, making splashes. When i was about to land it, mummy_toman got a huge pull and the fight was on. He was about to land it before his storm rubber hook straightened. The fish was lost. In the next 10min, i landed another big peacock before we decided to go home.

Peacock at first spot

Peacock at LSR

Next peacock at LSR

Finally, after weeks of no updating, I decided to post something, hehe. I decided to take a break from luring and do a little bit of baiting with 2 of my kakis. We went down to pasir ris and waited for my other friend to wake up, but he didn't. So only the 2 of us went, which meant no bikes. urghhhhh

We had to walk a really long way before we finally reached the spot after almost being chased by dogs. We set up our rods and casted out. The first 30 min were fishless until we saw huge groups of assam fish. We tried foul hooking them for about another 30min before we got 3 altogether. When they left, we continued fishing. ahhh, no fish in 30min. so we waited and waited....and waited until finally we started to get bites. The action didn't really stop for about close to 2 hours. we caught about 12 fish within the 2 hours.

Towards the end of the day, I received a huge tug on my rod. I picked it up and struck hard. YES, it was something heavy. keep going, keep going. YES, STINGRAY! It was a small one though but great fun on my light rod. In about 5min, my friend got a huge pull on his rod as well. struck, yes, SOMETHING HEAVY AGAIN! while he was reeling it in half way, his other rod got a huge pull as well!!! He gave me one of the rods and we both reeled the rays up. I think we must have hit a school of them as all our lines were casted in the same direction.

It started to rain after we caught the rays. So we packed up and headed to my friend's place for a seafood dinner.

fantastic view

Fly Fishing CR

today it was my first serious attempt to catch something on fly. As my fly reel was busted, i had to use An Ren's Ross Evo2. Met An Ren at the MRT station and proceeded to our spot. It had been a while since i practiced my casting but i could manage.

We reached our first spot. There were a few baby Peacock that were playing around with my fly. An Ren caught his first fish of the day. A palm-sized PB.

In about 5min, we decided to head on to the next spot. While dragging my fly along in the water, there was a huge pull at the end of my line. I saw a golden flash and a struck hard. YES, fish on! An Ren guided me throughout the whole fight but i couldnt really understand. I finally landed the nice-sized Peacock.

In the next 5min, i hooked on to a beautiful baby PB. It was spotted all over.

We decided to stay at the same spot for a bit longer. While stripping the line back, An Ren got a HUGE pull from a PB. I heard him go, "HO SEY LIAO!" but in a few seconds, his tippet gave way. It must have been one HUGE PB. After this, we decided to move on to the next spot.

Once we reached the second spot, after a few casts, there was nothing there so we decided to move to ANOTHER spot. At the other spot, there was nothing as well. So off we went to the second last spot.

I spotted a pair of breeding PBs. Casted out, strip, strip.....Strike!! Fish on! This time I managed to fight the PB well before bringing it up. It was about the same size as my first fish on fly, just that this one had nice spots on it.
An Ren caught a nice sized PB as well but i forgot when...=/

We decided to call it a day.

CR 081205

Arranged a last minute fishing trip with Samuel in the evening to go fish at Lower Seletar Reservoir. Reached at around 4.15pm.

At about 4.45pm, while casting my Jackson Dead Float, there was a huge monster which grabbed my lure and just kept going out peeling out line from my reel even though the drag was almost locked. I thought to myself, "Siao liao!!" And true enough, within 10 seconds, the line went loose. NOOOO!! The monster swam off with my Jackson Dead Float in its mouth. On further inspection of my line, it turns out that the snap knot failed on me and gave way. Oh well, R.I.P Dead Float. =(((

Sam came at about 5+. I went over to him and started fishing. Within a few casts, I got a bite from a PB but didn't managed to hook it successfully. Within the next few casts, I got another bite from a PB. I played with it, letting it swim back and forth, left to right, before the hook came off. ARGHHH!!! Sam also missed a PB on his Rogos.

While we were fishing, we didn't notice the ranger boat was coming closer and closer before it was about 10m away then we found out. I heard Sam say, "Zhao!! Ranger lai liao!!" I immediately ran to the main road. Phew, close one!! By the next 5min, we were back fishing again.

On my first cast with my River2Sea HumBug, I got a bite from an average-sized PB. This time i managed to bring it. It was my first ever kok-headed PB and was quite happy. Unhooked it and released it back. After a few more casts, I got another kok-headed PB. After this, we decided to call it a day as it was getting too dark.

CR 011205

Decided to go down to our usual spot for PBs today with or jiao. reached the place at around 8.30am and carried on walking to our spot.

After about 15min, we finally reached our spot. It wasn't a very good day for fishing at the sun wasn't out and the wind was blowing hard therefore we couldn't spot the PBs. As we were walking, or jiao spotted a small PB and casted his XPS minnow at it. On his first cast, FISH ON! As it was small, he subdued it in less than a minute.

We were walking somemore when I saw a structure in the water. I casted parallel to it and soon enough, I caught my first PB for that day. It was a hard fighter. It swam from left, right and left again. I finally managed to bring it in after a really hard fight. It turns out that I hooked it right next to its eye. Measured it and released it. It was 45cm in length, a fairly decent size.

We carried on walking along the sideline and soon enough, we spotted 2 probably breeding PBs. We tried at least 30 times of casting our lures and making them swim past the PB's mouth, the mama PB decided to whack my friend's XPS minnow. It was quite an average-sized one and managed to tire it out in 1min. Now it was my turn. I casted my River2Sea HumBug and let it sink on a rock right next to the PB's mouth. I tried to twitch but it seemed like my lure was stuck. I puled even harder this time and it turns out that a fish had attacked my lure. It was the papa PB and he wasn't happy. He swam left to right and continued this routine accompanied by a few aerial displays before I got it in about 2-3min after. I measured it and it was 50cm long, one of my biggest PBs yet.

After these fish, we decided to head home.

First fish on lure 061105

The past fishing trips have been really rotten so I didn't really bother to post pics and write about it.

started making my way to Lower Seletar Reservoir at the crack of dawn. Left the house at about 6.15am so as to reach the reservoir by around 7.15am. As soon as I stepped out of the house, the wind was blowing hard and pretty soon, as I expected, it started to rain like hell. I thought to myself, "awwwww, I wanna fish, I wanna fish!!! Please god, don't let it rain." boarded the MRT and off I went. While I was on the MRT, the weather wasn't so bad. But when I was a few stops away from my destination, it started to drizzle. NOOOO!!!

Finally reached the jetty. Samuel was already there under the shelter. We waited until it was just drizzling and the fishing begun.

Within about 40 casts, a small Peacock Bass atttacked my lure but just took a nibble. SIGH. We lured at the jetty for about 1.5hours before I finally persuaded Samuel to move on to the other side.

We reached the other side and started casting. I had a really good feeling that I was gonna catch something. And I was right. Within about 30 casts, I hooked on to a fish. It was a TOMAN!! Sadly, because I didn't set the hook properly, it got away. Again talking to myself, "Damn, my only chance to catch my first fish on lure and I blew it...Big time." With my hopes not lost yet, I resumed fishing with a positive attitude. And within 20 more casts, I was rewarded with a handsome Peacock Bass which really made my day. My first fish on lure! I fought it for close to about a minute before I subdued it. Lip gripped the bass, took a few photos and released to fight another day.......With me! haha. After a few more casts, I hooked on another Peacock. But probably because I didn't set the hook properly, once it jumped, the hook came loose.
Maybe I should learn from those Japanese lurers. When a fish bites, the strike like it's nobody's business. Haha.

We were about to end the fishing trip when Sam wanted to try out my Dead Float lure. So we exchanged. He lent me his River2Sea Humbug. In about 4 casts, I heard Sam saying, "Tio, tio!!"
I looked over to his side, rod bending hard, and could see him really in fast. According to him, the toman managed to strip a bit of his line. I thought to myself, "Wah basket, use my lure to catch fish." Haha.

Overall, I was quite happy that an overfished reservoir can still produce quite fantastic results.

CR at Mac

went to macritchie early this morning hunting for lampans(and accidentely, eartheaters). started in the wee hours in the morning, around 6.30am. we set up our gear quick and set off. half way to the spot, we saw extremely BLACK clouds. shit shit shit. no choice bt to seek shelter in those tiny pavillion things.

in about 15 minutes, the sky cleared up with occasional drizzles. reached first spot in 5min. berley a lil' bit. (1 month ago)

went down to lower peirce last month. (didnt have this blog so long ago)

as usual, went with or jiao and sam. we were fishing for roughly around 3hours when sam had to go for tuition. before he left, we caught numerous PB fries again. great fun on light tackle. only the occasional 1kg+ PB comes along by "accident". anyway, after sam left, chirstian came to join us at around 4pm, which wasnt very wise as we were leaving at around 5+. he set up his gear and fished for about 1hour. caught nothing. =(

so he decided to try his own method. swing the rod up and down, probably trying to hypnotize the fish into biting the jig. -swing swing swing- FSHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! no kidding, a fish took his jig and made a run for it! he struck once and thought it got stuck. pull pull. finally realising it was a fish, chris struck! oh great, reel jam. =(((((( or jiao grabbed the rod and used his black magic to unjam it. reel unjammed and orjiao brought in the fish for chris. HAHA. nice specimen as well. chris was overjoyed by his FIRST BIG PB. jumping up and down screaming.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fishing-chronicles.blogspot.com/2005/05/lower-peirce-again-1-month-ago.html' title='lower peirce again!
